Recognizing International Credit Union Day

International Credit Union (ICU) Day has been celebrated on the third Thursday of October since 1948. The day is recognized to reflect upon the credit union movement's history and to promote its achievements. It is a day to honor those who have dedicated their lives to the movement and show members our appreciation. This year's theme, "Local Service. Global Good." emphasizes credit unions' positive impact in their communities locally and around the world.

City County Credit Union is proud to be part of the movement. A few years ago, in conjunction with the World Council of Credit Unions, we raised funds for the Busia orphanage in Kenya. One of the Council's goals was to move them towards financial independence.

As a member of the World Council, I am happy to report a positive development.  The Busia residents are now focusing on learning farming techniques to plant local crops. They have even opened a vegetable stand in town with the surplus. This will help them to generate income, something that is very new to them. With this income (however minimal it may seem), the World Council will be able to more effectively teach them basic financial educational concepts.

Happy International Credit Union Day!
